Engaging Hon. Commissioner for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation towards the domestication and implemention of the SDGs in the Ministry

We had a critical and brainstorming round-table engagement with the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mrs. Lola Akande

on the urgent need to mainstream, domesticate and implement the Sustainable Development Goals in the Ministry for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (MWAPA).

We had in Attendance the Honourable Commissioner herself, the Director Child Development to WAPA, Mrs Alaba Fadairo, the Deputy Director Press and Public Relations to WAPA, Mrs. Modupe Ileyemi, The Executive director of the Conveying organization , Mr. Adebowale Adeniyi, Our Development Partners: Executive Director, Arise Nigerian Woman, Amb. Abimbola Junaid, Executive Director, Women, Law and Development Centre Nigeria, Dr. Keziah Awosika, Executive Director, Greenspring Developement Initiative, Mrs, Mekuye Olabisi, the Manager, Modupe Oke Foundation (VMO) Mrs. Kanyisola Odewole, the program Director, Modupe Oke Foundation, Mrs. Joy Lawal, The Executive Director, Peace and Development Initiative Summit (PADIS), Mr. Imoleayo Obi, and our media partners.

We identified the importance of Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the fight against poverty and Gender inequality. A nation’s population is usually almost divided evenly between males and females however; the sharing of power, wealth, influence, employment etc. has never been close to equality. Poverty has a woman face since 70% of people in poverty are women.
From a global perspective, women own only 1 percent of property, earn 10 percent of all income, and yet they produce half of the world’s food and do 60% of the world’s Jobs.
The Success of the SDGs is highly dependent and measured on the poverty level, gender equality, education, social inclusion and economic prosperity, viability and stability of any nation or state, so the need to engage the MWAPA is not negotiable and cannot be over-emphasized.

We were able to recommend policies that will address some fundamental issues facing the MWAPA and their programmes, and we were able to highlight the way forward and the need to work together in collaborative capacity in moving the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and Lagos State to the Next Level.

The Response from the Honourable Commisioner, Hon. Mrs Lola Akande, was very immense and she showed appreciation and readiness to work with us in a robust capacity in ensuring the SDGs are incorporated and mainstreamed in their development plans, and also partner with us in the area of Capacity Building, Advocacy, research, Policy analysis and Development.

Lastly, we use this opportunity to thank the Hon.Commissioner, the Director for Child Development, the Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, the entire staffs of Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Our Development Partners, Arise Nigeria Woman, Women, Law and Development Initiative (WLDCN), Greenspring Development Initiative, Victoria Modupe Oke(VMO), Peace and Development Initiative Summit, and our media partners. We thank everybody for a successful policy maker engagement towards the domestication and the implementation of SDGs.

We pray that in togetherness we shall move Lagos, Nigeria and the world to a peaceful, just, inclusive, prosperous and a sustainable state, nation and world respectively.

Thank You
